Welcome everyone….I am very excited about our new and innovative web site. It is the same legacy in a new way!
My monthly blogs will cover a wide array of show pig topics that affect all of us. It will also feature some of the outstanding youth I’ve had the privilege of getting to know. This month I would like to share with everyone the accomplishments of two young people from Indiana that just completed their last State Fair.
Steffi Newbold is the 18 year old daughter of Scott & Nancy Newbold. She is a recent graduate of Rushville High School of Cosmetology. Steffi has exhibited livestock competitively in Indiana and at National Shows like WPX, National Western, NAILE, Team Purebred Summer Spectacular and NJSA summer spectacular. Steffi exhibited the Grand Champion Market Wether at Rush County Fair Indiana 9 of the 10 years she showed. Other highlights of her career include Champion Spot Barrow (3rd overall breeds) 2011 Indiana State Fair, Champion Landrace Gilt at World Pork Expo and Indiana State Fair 2011, High Point Landrace Gilt IJSC points 2011, Grand Barrow 2013 Rush County Fair, and Grand Barrow 2013 Eager Beaver Classic.
Of all that she has shown, my favorite Steffi exhibited was a 262 litter Crossbones x Steel Wheels gilt Steffi named “Bones”. Steffi drove Bones to be named Grand gilt 8 times and Reserve Grand gilt 4 times in the spring and summer of 2012.
Congratulations to Steffi and her family on an outstanding show career. I wish you the best in your endeavors and feel blessed to have gotten to know you.
Austen Irvin from Mooreland Indiana is the 18 year old son of Tony and Kristen Irvin. He is a 2013 graduate of Blue River Valley High School. Austen will be continuing his education at Indiana Technical School this Fall. Austen is very hard working and a well-rounded young man.
To say his show career has been a success, would be an understatement. Austen has been very competitive in the State of Indiana and nationally over the past 9 years. He won the overall points championship on the ICPA circuit in 2010. That same year he was selected as Champion Sr. Showman at the Indiana State Fair. Austen drove both the Champion Poland Barrow and Champion Landrace Barrow at 2007 Indiana State Fair, Champion Spot at Kansas City 2008, Champion Spot Barrow Indiana State Fair 2010, and Champion Duroc Barrow NJSA Southeast Regional. Austen has been very successful at the Team Purebred events by showing the Grand Barrow overall at the 2012 Eastern Regional and Reserve Grand Barrow overall at the Team Purebred Summer Spectacular in 2009. Austen dominated at his final County Fair this year in Henry County and it speaks volumes about his work ethic. He exhibited the Grand Barrow, Grand Gilt, Grand Steer, Grand Heifer, Grand Lamb, and was Champion swine showman. That feat is rare!
Austen has had much success with cattle also. He showed the Champion Chi Steer (3rd overall breeds) at 2010 Indiana State Fair, Champion Crossbred Steer and Reserve Grand overall 2013 Indiana State Fair, and Champion Mainetainer Heifer at 2013 Indiana State Fair.
Austen, I tip my hat to you in respect for the drive, perseverance and hard work you have done with you livestock but most importantly for the way you act — humble and gracious regardless of winning or losing. It’s has been my honor to get to know you and your family. I wish you the BEST!
Until Next Time, Kyle
